So, What Do You Do?

Sugarboo Designs - Modern Art Print

So, what do you do?

I’m sure you’ve been asked that question a time or two. What’s your answer?

Do you stutter & stammer, trying to say what you really want to, – about being a creative business owner – but nothing seems to come our right or sound impressive? Do you make up excuses or revert back to, “it’s a hobby”. Do you skip the whole creative business owner part all together & just talk about your day job?

Whatever your answer or excuse has been in the past, forget it. Don’t think about it any more. Move on. Move forward. Craft yourself a new answer. Something that makes you feel good about what you’re saying. Something that oozes confidence.

It’s not hard. You can do it. You NEED to do it. It’s necessary… it’s necessary that you take yourself & what you do seriously. It’s necessary to be able to share your passion with others. It’s necessary to learn to be bold, to be authentic.

It doesn’t have to be long or insightful. Keep it simple. One to two sentences is plenty. Be straightforward.

“I’m a…”

Finish that sentence out with a few different endings. Practice saying each of them. Which one makes you feel good about yourself, about your business, about what you’ve chosen for your life.

If it doesn’t feel good, if it doesn’t motivate you or make you feel more confident, don’t say it. Try again.

You never know who you’ll meet that will ask you that question. Don’t stutter & stammer around sounding like someone who doesn’t have a clue. Let them see that spark in your eye & that smile on your face as you share your passion with them!

Does Your “Brand” Have An “Identity”?

Image via Fab Pins on Etsy

I want my little creative business to be memorable & stand out to people. I want to reach out to my ideal customer & I want them to know what I’m all about without them having to dig too deep to find out.

I can accomplish all of this if my brand has an identity.

Let’s start at the beginning…

In order to be memorable, your business needs to be branded. What’s that? Check out these articles for some help.

Now, what is a brand “identity”?

Most people associate the term “branding” with graphics…the visual part of a business, but branding isn’t only about a businesses graphics. That’s definitely part of it & in my opinion, a huge part since graphics are so “in your face”, but there are other things to think about when it comes to branding.

Your branding is a message. It needs to tell a story…the story of your business.

Whether it’s your graphics, the way your respond to emails, your blog posts, or how you dress, it’s all a part of your brand. When potential customers come across you or your business, do they get a sense of what you’re about without having to go to your “about me” page, your profile, or ask you?” If so, then your brand has an identity. If not, you have some work to do.

Remember, you have 30 seconds to grab someone’s attention. You’re trying to bring in your ideal customer. Can they tell if they’re in the right place in 30 seconds?  Your brand identity will tell them if they are or not.

Let’s take the Duggar Family for example.

Right off the bat you can form an opinion of them just by looking at their photo. If you watch an episode of them on tv, you can hear the way they talk, see how they dress, & a bit about their daily lives. You’ve not read their books & you’ve only seen one episode, but you know a lot about them already. You know whether your “into” them or not. It didn’t take long.

That’s a brand identity. Does your business have one?

My Mission

The Way I See It #17 – Wonderlane on Flickr

My Mission
My goal for this blog is to provide a place where moms who want to grow a successful creative business without neglecting their families can come to get advice, help, inspiration & encouragement on turning their small business into a successful money maker.

Why am I passionate about this?
Because this is me! I am a SAHM & I have a business. I want both things in my life, but there needs to be balance. I don’t want to neglect my family & house to work on my business all the time, but if I never work on my business then it won’t make me any money.

When I first started down this road to building a business, I was given a piece of advice from a very dear friend who 20 years ago was in my shoes. She said, “Any time you add something into your life, it will take away from the other things you already have. Make sure you’re willing to give up some of what you already have for what you want.”

This really made me think because she was right! Right now I’m writing this blog post. If I weren’t doing this or anything business related, what would I be doing right now? Probably cleaning, preparing for my garden, keeping in touch with friends, or playing with my 2 year old. But I’m not, I’m writing this post, so I’ve given up this time to business.

I can do it & so can you!
I know it’s possible to grow a successful business & have a family. People do it all the time. I just don’t want to be one of those people who look back & say, “Yeah, I grew a big money making business, but I didn’t spend as much time as I should have with my husband & children & now I regret that.”

NO REGRETS!

If we, as wives & mothers, constantly strive to keep business & family balanced than it can be accomplished. It may be a slower process than someone without the responsibility of a family, but it can happen. We may need to move things around in our schedules, get up early or stay up late, & learn to be better at prioritizing & setting goals, but it can be done. I can do it, & so can you!

hugs, Meagan
