One Easy Way To Make A New Habit Stick

print by The Big Harumph on Etsy

Do you ever wish you could create a good habit that you’d actually stick with?

You recognize the habit you need to make, you start off strong, but then somewhere along the way you completely abandoned it.

If so, then I have a solution for you!

You Can’t Possibly Remember Everything

One reason you may not be able to stick with the new habit is because you forget about it. You know you need to make a change, you’re motivated to create your new habit, but somewhere along the way it falls to the wayside.

It could be a lack of motivation. It could be that you don’t have a clear direction of where to go. Maybe it’s that the habit you’ve set for yourself is unrealistic or too complicated.

All of the above are reasons for not sticking with your change, but forgetting about it is at the top of the list too.

You Have A Lot Going On

You’re busy!

Not only are you a business owner that’s trying to grow your business, but you are a wife, mother, daughter, sister, & friend. You have responsibilities at work, around the house, & in the community. Perhaps you even say yes too much.

With all you’ve got going on, you have a lot on your mind & a lot you need to remember. When you’re trying to stay on track towards creating a new habit, it can be easy to forget about it among your day-to-day activities.

Let me give you an example of a good habit that I’m CONSTANTLY forgetting about.

I know that drinking water is soooo healthy for me. I want to get in the habit of drinking it throughout the day, but I always forget about it. I’m the worst when it comes to drinking anyway! Not just water, anything! I’m just not a very thirsty person, & I don’t think about drinking something until I’m eating. So even though I really, really want to develop this good habit in my life, I don’t because I have so many other things to think about throughout the day that I just forget about it.

What You Need Is A Reminder

You need something that will trigger your memory when you see, hear, or do it.

It’s called an action trigger, because whenever you come across your trigger, the lightbulb goes off in you head, & it triggers an action from you.

The key here is to plan ahead.

When I say “plan ahead”, I’m talking about looking over your day & finding things you do over & over during the day. If you want to get in the habit of doing something repeatedly throughout the day, then knowing what you already do repeatedly during the day is a great starting point.

You already have things that come second nature to you. You probably eat 3 times a day. You go to the bathroom several times a day. You check your email a few times a day. Maybe you’re like me & you have a newborn that you have to feed during the day.

How Action Triggers Will Change Your Behavior

What you need to do to get your new habit to become a permanant habit is to piggy-back it onto something else you already do… like feeding the baby.

Babies eat a lot during the day. If every time I fed the baby that triggered my memory about drinking a glass of water, then at the end of the day I should be doing really well with my water intake.

You see, feeding the baby becomes an action trigger. It reminds me to take action… to drink my water. It helps me not to have to remember it all on it’s own & eventually my good habit will be set & I won’t have to think about it anymore.

Let’s look at another example.

Let’s say you struggle with productivity & one of the things holding you back is checking your email too often. In order to decrease the amount of time you spend in your inbox, you need something to signal when it’s time to check it. If you decide that checking it 3 times a day is sufficient, then your action trigger could be meal times. You eat breakfast, you remember to check & respond to emails. Same goes for lunch & dinner. After a month or so of following your meal time action trigger, you’re more than likely be over your bad habit of constantly checking your email & into your good habit of only checking it 3 times a day.

In Conclusion

It takes 30 days to make an action become a habit. It’s easy to start off strong, but staying strong is the tricky part. No matter what habit you want to create in yourself, it helps to have something that reminds you of it during the day & action triggers can be your key to success!

I Broke My Own Rule & How It Worked Out For Me

image by Brandi Fitzgerald on Etsy

Today was one of those days for me. I couldn’t focus on what I was supposed to, I kept getting distracted, & I was feeling like I wasn’t going to accomplish much. So I broke one of the things I preach about all the time.

If you’ve been reading my blog long, you know I’m huge on creating a schedule that works for your life & helps you accomplish some serious business tasks. I’m huge on being organized & sticking with it so you get stuff done.

Well today I woke up ready to hit the ground running. I had my planner with my 4 to-do’s on it. I was motivated. I was ready. I needed to edit some Q&A Wednesday videos, work on a guest post, work on some newsletters, & work on photos for my shop, but I just couldn’t get into what I had listed.

So instead of following my schedule & writing some half-hearted junk, I decided that I wasn’t going to even touch what I didn’t absolutely have to. I was going to do what I was motivated to do because I want to produce quality content!

So what did I get accomplished today? A lot. I got my December blog content scheduled & wrote 9 posts for December alone, not counting this one. Plus I got 2 videos edited, uploaded, & scheduled, I made some bath bombs, filled orders, finished sewing my new Winter Collection Washcloth Bibs, & even had some time to work on newsletters after the kids when to bed. All that, not counting spending some time playing with my kiddos & hanging out with my man.

Whew! What a day! I seriously got a lot done, but only because I listened to myself & did what I was motivated to do. That doesn’t always happen & my days don’t always go this way. I just had one of those great days.

What do you do when you’re not feeling motivated to stick with your schedule? Do you break the rules & do what works for you or do you push through your lack of motivation & stay on track with your plans?

Why Being Indecisive Is Killing Your Creative Mojo

image via Moon&Lion on Etsy

I started this little creative project a while back. I decided I was going to make a flag bunting to add some color & a decorative element to my studio. You’ve seen them, right? They seem to be everywhere these days & I’m jumping on the bandwagon. I think they’re adorable! So I checked out a few DIY bunting posts & I was pretty sure I could handle it.

I went to the fabric store & got the fabrics & supplies I needed for the project, came home, & got started. I cleared my space, got all my supplies ready, & prepped my fabrics by ironing them. Then I realized that I needed to make a pattern & before I made an actual pattern I needed to decide what size I wanted my little flags to be.

STOP!

Size? OMGoodness, I didn’t even think of that. Not a big deal though, right? Just pick a size, make your pattern, & get to it.

Well for me it wasn’t that simple. I spent {way to much} time thinking about where I would put it. “My desk or the wall? If it’s on my desk, it will need to be small. If it’s on the wall, it can be bigger.” By the time I was finished “deciding”, I was fresh out of motivation to continue. I’d already wasted way too much time on such a simple project, my kids were due to get up any minute, & I was just getting started. Frustrating!! So I decided that I’d pack all my stuff back up & work on it at a later time when I was in a more creative mood. Lord knows if I try making something & I’m not feeling it…it’s probably gonna suck!

Guess what? Yeah, I still don’t have a banner for my studio. Not because I haven’t been in any creative moods lately because I certainly have, but because I let my being indecisive kill my mojo or my passion for my project.

Have you ever had that happen to you? Sure you have! We do it a lot…especially as creative business owners, but I want to encourage you today to STOP taking forever to decide on things! It not only kills your creative mojo, but it kills your business mojo too.

When you have a new idea pop into your head, write down everything you’re thinking of at that very moment. Be detailed & specific because I guarantee you you won’t remember it later. Organize it into actionable steps to get you from where you are now to completing your idea then get going. Don’t wait. Don’t take too much time to decide if it’s a good fit or how you’re going to market it. You know if it works for your biz & you’re never gonna know if it will catch on until you do it & test it on your market. If it’s a keeper, focus on marketing, pricing, & all that other stuff then.

Don’t let your mojo die! Stay excited about your plans & don’t let them fizzle out.

Tell me about a time when you let indecisiveness kill your mojo in the comments below!
