How To Stop Decision Paralysis & Solve Problems Effectively

image via SmallNotebook.org

Imagine that you make decorative wreaths so people can give their homes a face-lift year round. Your business is doing well & you’re now looking into expanding your reach by creating patterns to sell on your website for those who like DIY projects. You’ve picked out 5 different wreaths that you’re going to start with & you begin researching where to start.

Suddenly you realize that this is going to be a much bigger job than you had anticipated. There are so many things you have to think about. Breaking down the steps, photos, creating a pdf, putting all together, do you provide the materials or not, packaging, marketing, ahhhhh!!! Suddenly you’re stuck. You start feeling overwhelmed, you’re loosing site of the end result you’re looking for, & you don’t know where to begin.

Does this sound like something you’ve experienced before in your business?

This is a classic example of coming up against a problem that results in decision paralysis.

The Brain

There’s this part of your brain {& mine} that’s rational & super helpful. It helps you think, plan, set goals, & make decisions, but it’s also overly analytical & makes simple situations much more difficult than they should be.

It can be your best friend because it really guides you along, helping you to plan out projects & get from point a to point b, but it becomes overwhelmed easily especially when a kink is thrown into the mix.

This part of your brain then kicks into problem-solving mode & focuses on the kink so much that it makes it bigger than it actually is. All of this analyzing & over-thinking leads to decision paralysis.

Decision paralysis is when there’s a decision that needs to be made, like where to start on making your wreath patterns, but there are so many choices that you get stuck, not knowing which choice to make. So you do nothing. You stop. You become stagnant.

Nix the Negative

In order to take the benefits of this part of your brain & make the most of it, you need to counteract the negative side.

Think of a time when you faced a similar situation as the one I described above & work your way through it with the following points.

1. Keep your problem in perspective

When you hit a road block, many times our brains start over-analyzing the situation. We take something that really isn’t a big deal & we make it huge when in all reality this “big” problem more than likely has a small solution.

2. Prevent decision paralysis

The primary thing that’s going to keep you from developing decision paralysis when you’re faced with a problem is to have crystal clear direction for where you want to go. You need to prepare these directions or rules ahead of time so that when the problem arises, you’re prepared.

When your brain is so focused on the problem at hand, it can’t stop & think of how to deal with the problem correctly. You need to tell it exactly what it needs to do. You have to provide crystal clear directions when you’re faced with any problem.

Now obviously you’re not going to know each & every step to direct yourself in, but you can know the most important steps to take.

What helps you focus when you’re feeling overwhelmed? Is it getting all of your ideas out of your head & down on paper? Is it talking things over with a mentor? Maybe it’s taking a break & doing something fun for 10 minutes. Whatever it is, make it a rule. Write down, “When I feel overwhelmed I will immediately do a “brain dump”.”

How do you feel about hiring certain projects out in order to make it easier on yourself? Do you have guidelines for that sort of thing? If that’s a tough decision for you to make think of how you can make it simpler. Maybe you could write down, “Hire out all jobs less than $100.”

What about getting stressed because you don’t have the equipment that would make things easier on you & you want to save money. You could write down, “Use what you have.” as one of your rules.

No matter what problem arises, knowing exactly what to do to make a particular decision easier is your best bet for decreasing overwhelm & decision paralysis. Write down these important steps so you can remember them so when you’re faced with a problem, you can look at your list & know exactly what to do.

What problem are you faced with right now that’s creating decision paralysis for you?

Q&A Wednesday: Struggling With Burnout

I’ve heard it said that burnout is a good thing. What does that mean really? From my understanding it meant that when you’re on a roll, don’t stop until you’ve burnt out. Don’t stop until you’ve completed your project or finished all of your brilliant ideas. What do you think about that?

I see some light in that, but there’s also darkness too. I’m sure it depends on what you’re talking about. Sometimes I get this great idea I want to try…like putting together a Mini Marketing Course {hint, hint}…& I can see where burnout would be good in that situation. I need to get all my idea on paper & get to work while I’m still excited & passionate about it. If I take my time I may forget what I wanted to do with it or I may move on to something else. I tend to do that!

But…if I look at burning out from the other end of the stick…working like crazy to get lots of things accomplished, I’d never be finished & I’d end up very unhappy & unfulfilled. I have so much that I should be, need to be, want to be accomplishing that if I laid it all out, my list would be a mile long. That in itself would overwhelm me! So today’s video is all about looking at burning out from this perspective.

If you’re struggling with that overwhelmed, drained feeling & you’re more stressed with your business than excited…this video & my suggestions are for you. Let me know your thoughts! I’d love to hear from you!

BTW…here’s a great article on Scoutie Girl about Expanding & Contracting. Fabulous advice!

Taking A Break

photo credit - Mommy Makes on Etsy

Do you ever feel overwhelmed or like you have so many things you need to do & catch up on, it’s not even funny? Maybe you’ve felt unsure if something was working for you & you weren’t sure if you should continue doing it or not. Either way you know you need a break!

Well, that’s exactly the way I’m feeling right now & I definitely need a break!

No excuses here…just the truth. I’m pregnant. I’m still in my first trimester & I’m TIRED ALL THE TIME! Seriously. I could sleep constantly. But besides that, I have a family to take care of, a house to clean, a garden to grow, friends & family to keep up with, hobbies that I’m seriously getting behind on, not to mention my Etsy shop. I’m close to releasing my new line, Baby Swank Naturals, but I still have some finishing touches that need to be completed.

I’m assuming that most of you who are here reading my blog are moms with businesses {since that’s who I write too} & I just want to say that I’m so grateful for you. I’m serious. I truly am. I know that I can be honest with you because you’re all in the same boat as me. You all have families & you’re trying to run a creative business as well as keep up with the rest of your life & you know as well as I do that it’s not always easy! Sometimes things work in our lives & others don’t. All we can do is get rid of what doesn’t & keep movin’ on!

So with that being said, I’m going to take a break from blogging a bit. I may take a total break for a while, or I may just post once a week. Either way, this will be good for me. I need it. I still plan on sending out my weekly newsletter so if you’ve signed up for that you can keep up with me that way or on Facebook & Twitter.

Oh yeah…one last thing before I go, since I am taking this little break I wanted to offer you all some limited deals on some of my services.

I’m decreasing my 5 Steps to Shop SEO program from $57.00 to $30.00 for  a limited time so if you’ve been considering it, wanting it, or needing it, but cash has been short, now is the time to try it out. Remember it’s a 100% satisfaction guarantee so you don’t have anything to lose!

I’m also decreasing my Just Right Shop Critique by 50% for the time being too, so if you’ve followed along with my mini critiques on the Team SASSY blog or you participated in my critiques in the Etsy Virtual Labs & you’ve been thinking you’d like a critique on your shop, now is definitely the time because it will never be this discounted again! That makes it $98.50 for a full, super detailed shop critique. Plus…this critique comes with the 5 Steps to Shop SEO as a bonus so you’ll get two great programs at a super discounted price. Don’t wait. This won’t last long!

Simplifying, De-cluttering, & Prioritizing

photo courtesy of Cristian V. via Flickr

Well, if you’ve been reading this blog for long, you know that I’m a big fan of schedules & organization & I’m also a big fan of getting your priorities in line.

So, I have some changes that I’ll be making to my blog starting at the beginning of May that I want to go ahead & share with you all so you know what to expect.

As many of you know, I’m a mom to two handsome little men & my day revolves around them. They’re the best! Now that Spring is here there are a lot of other responsibilities on my plate. Gardening season is starting here in Tennessee & I’m all about my organic veggies! Plus the boys & I are wanting to spend more time outside. The man & I bought them a puppy for Easter & they just can’t wait to go out to play with her everyday. Plus, I’m really trying to do better with my oldest’s school work. Yes he’s almost 3, but it’s never too early to start. He can already read & he knows where countries are on the globe that I didn’t even know existed! He’s a pretty smart guy! And on top of all of that, I’m getting ready to release a new product line in my shop, Baby Swank, & I really need to get that on a roll.

Anyway, with all of that being said…I’m going to decrease posting here from 5 times a week to 3 times a week during May & see how that goes.

So, thank you so, so much for understanding & remember…we create businesses that work for us & our families, not the other way around!

hugs…Meagan

Creating Mental White Space – WTMess?

Lost in the Wake Print by Best Art Studios 2 on Etsy

Lost in the Wake Print by Best Art Studios 2 on Etsy

So, I’m here to tell you that today has been a crappy day…business wise. I can not seem to get it together!

I’ve been struggling about whether or not to tell you all about my crappy day because in my mind I’m thinking that I need to portray having it together since I’m telling you all to have it together. I’m the one here that’s giving you tips & advice on being organized, prioritizing, & meeting your goals for your creative business, yet I can’t seem to do that today.

But, I want to be honest with you. I want to share myself with you & not be fake. I want you to relate to me, & there are days that are just “off days”. I know I have them, I know you have them, therefore we can relate.

So, I can’t get it together today. There I said it!

So I sat down to get to work & it was like I was lost. I wasn’t motivated & I couldn’t seem to get anything done. I seriously spent an hour & a half doing…I don’t know what…I have nothing to show for it. Surfing the internet mostly. Yes, I was reading up on business related topics & searching for things that would help my business, but I didn’t really have anything to show for it afterwards. I was so frustrated.

Then I decided to get to work, but it was like I couldn’t get anything accomplished & so my frustration grew. I tried to stop working & go do something else, but then I was stressed that I wasn’t getting anything done, & on & on it went. GRRRR!

Finally, I decided to go through my own time management course {which I do periodically}. I skipped right to the Mental Clarity

section because I think that’s my problem. I have so many things I need/want to do & they’re all swimming around in my head that I can’t seem to get them straight. It’s the end of the month. Most of my monthly goals are complete & it’s like I have nothing to work towards.

So, thank you Marie Forleo, you are a genius!! I love this exercise because as Marie says, “Inner chaos creates outer chaos.” & there are times when we need to create mental white space. This exercise helps me focus & have some clarity.

Just like a webpage needs white space for things to stand out & not look like a jumbled mess, our brains need white space too! If we keep everything in our heads, never getting it out, never prioritizing it & turning it into goals with actionable steps for completing those goals, then we have no direction. We wander aimlessly from task to task, never getting much accomplished.

Mental Clarity List

So above is my mental clarity list. It’s not huge, but it has helped to focus my mind a bit. Thanks for listening & thanks for understanding!

What do you do on the days you just can’t seem to get it together? Leave me a comment below & tell me what works for you.
